Using AMCAS you can apply for various medical colleges simultaneously. An AMCAS application costs around $35 for each school. In general you can apply up to 20 schools. In this case the cost of application comes down.
Each medical school to which you apply through AMCAS sends you another secondary application form in 45-60 days. Medical schools charge from $50 to $100 as their "processing fees" for secondary application. You can also avail fee waiver facilities. By availing this facility, you can apply to 10 schools free of cost and for others too you pay a very nominal fee.
While applying for admission in medical school, you also need some recommendation letters issued by your current or previous faculty heads. Medical schools generally require recommendation letters issued by Premedical committee of your undergraduate school. Importance of these recommendation letters varies from school to school.
After short listing application forms, medical colleges invite promising applicants to appear for admission interview. During interview, admission committee evaluates your overall performance through GPA, MCAT, academic and extra curricular performance.
There are some medical colleges that don't follow AMCAS application procedures. In particular, some Ivy League schools and Texas schools have their separate medical school admission criteria. You should know about medical school requirements of such schools in detail before applying. Some medical colleges conduct their own entrance tests to select the best students. These colleges also evaluate your overall performance through GPA, MCAT, academic and extra curricular performance during interview.
Medical school acceptance letters are sent to selected candidates within 3-4 weeks after interview. Some schools take several months to declare the results of interview. Through their intimation letter, medical colleges give 15 days period to the selected candidates to make necessary deposits. Before depositing fees, it is better to calculate how much your entire medical education is going to cost. After receiving the fees, medical colleges reserve your place in the coming session of selected course.
International medical colleges are an alternative for those students who couldn't get admission in U.S. medical school. Admissions requirements of these colleges are different from those of U.S. medical schools. Some international medical colleges don't require high MCAT scores; hence, students can get medical school admission quite easily. However, students whose first language isn't English can also get admission in these schools. But they will be required to achieve a minimum TOEFL score.
